Do any of the following describe you?·

Do you believe it is important to “do things properly” or “right?”

 Are you a perfectionist?

Are you cautious and careful about how you do things?

Do you prefer order and structure? Are you organized?

Do you like to plan ahead? Do you think before acting?

Are you able to delay gratification? Are you able to easily inhibit an impulse?

Do you consider yourself conscientious? Are you dutiful?

Are you quiet, restrained, or reserved by nature?

Is it hard to impress you?

Does it take time to get to know you?

Are you likely to withhold your opinion until you get to know someone better?

Clients with a combination of the above, in extremes, report the following unintended and often undesired consequences or behaviors: social isolation, aloof and distant relationships, cognitive rigidity, high detailed focused processing, risk aversion, strong needs for structure, inhibited emotional expression, and hyper-perfectionism.

What is RO-DBT?

RO-DBT (Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is a trans-diagnostic treatment developed by Dr. Tom Lynch, PhD. It is designed to address a spectrum of difficult-to-treat disorders that share similar features associated with maladaptive overcontrol (including those described in the section above). In RO-DBT, the focus is on self-enquiry, creating a willingness to be receptive and open to your environment and/or social feedback, as well as acceptance of emotions, thoughts and behavior. RO-DBT balances self-inquiry, empathy, and warm acceptance with behavior change. Skills training and a strong client-therapist relationship assist with this change. The RO-DBT method is successful in working with clients with many different mental health challenges including chronic depression, treatment resistant anxiety disorders, certain personality disorders, and anorexia nervosa. For further information on research for this evidence-based therapy, please see Dr. Lynch’s web site: www.radicallyopen.net.
